Destination Europe

ASSIGNMENT 4 – Factors affecting the popularity and appeal of destinations.

TASK OUTLINE:

Begin by selecting a destination in Europe that has grown in popularity over the last 15 years (this must be a different destination to those you have looked at in previous assignments) (parts 2 and 3 should form the bulk of this assessment)

1. Briefly describe the main factors that can influence the popularity and appeal of a European travel destination. Keep this brief – simply an introduction and state that you will go on to apply these ideas to consider the reasons for the growth in popularity of your chosen European tourist destination.

2. For your chosen destination carry out research on the growth of its tourism and analyse the range of factors that have led to the destinations’s growing appeal

3. Consider and analyse how the destination has maximised the controllable factors (such as accessibility, accommodation etc.) to increase its popularity through destination management etc.

The following powerpoint will give you ideas for structuring parts 2 and 3 and also things you might consider to help you in your research and write up.

ASSIGNMENT 2 – Features & appeal of different destinations to different tourists

In task 2 of the Destination Europe unit you are required to be aware of the features of appeal of different tourist destinations and how these features of appeal will vary according to different types of tourists.

For recapping ideas, the powerpoint used in the lessons is given below:

ASSIGNMENT 2 – THE TASK

Aim:

This is the second of the four assignments for this unit. This is an individual assignment. In this assignment you have to recommend a destination that meets the needs and circumstances of a customer given in the pen portrait. You will have to identify the key features that give your destination appeal and justify how it meets the needs of the customer.

PEN PORTRAIT – COMPLEX NEEDS

Christian and Emily have 2 children; Edward is 4 and Katharine is 12 years old. Emily and Christian are both teachers and are restricted to school holidays; the family are therefore planning a week’s break over Easter. As they already have a family holiday to the USA booked for the summer they would prefer to keep the overall cost of this short break down as much as possible. This is the first time Edward has flown and he is nervous about flying. The family therefore hope to keep the travelling time fairly short. The family like independence to explore a destination, they are interested in history, art and culture and they are keen to sample as much of the local culture as possible. If possible Christian and Emily would like the children to be able to experience a traditional event or activity during their holiday. They family also enjoy outdoor activities and Christian is currently training for the London Marathon.

What form will your assignment take?

For this assignment you will need to provide a written report on your findings.

Your report will need to be in two parts. For your chosen destination you need to…

  • describe the key features that give the recommended destination appeal to different types of tourists (be careful – don’t just describe the features of a destination – concentrate on those that give it appeal – make this clear in your description);
  • Explain how your chosen destination meets the needs of the tourists specified take each aspect of the pen portrait and explain how your recommended destination would meet the needs / circumstances specified.

REMEMBER

  • You must keep a record of the research you undertake to complete this assignment in the form of a bibliography
  • A destination – NOT an island or country should be chosen (should belong to one of the categories of destinations used in A)
  • Refer back to the list of features of appeal that we have talked through for ideas.

Writing up your Assignment:

  • Start by including your pen portrait

  • State that on the basis of the requirements of your pen portrait, you have chosen ………………. and that you will begin by considering what the features of appeal of ………………….. are to different types of tourists and that you will then look at the features of appeal of ………………. which specifically meet the complex needs of the family in your pen portrait.

Planning out your work

For the first part of the assignment, make sure you identify the main features of appeal to different types of tourists of the destination that you have chosen. You should use the sub-headings that we talked about in the lesson to help you organise your work, but do not forget – only include / describe features if they are actually. (see the powerpoint if you can’t remember what the different features are but these should also be in your class notes).

OVER HALF TERM YOU SHOULD WORK ON AND AIM TO COMPLETE THE FIRST PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT – WE ONLY HAVE ONE WEEK ON YOUR RETURN TO COMPLETE THE SECOND PART.

Your evidence must be submitted by 7th NOVEMBER 2007
